[잠망경] 출감

병동환자들이 퇴원하고 싶어하는 이유는 감옥에서 죄수들이 출감하기를 원하는 마음과 크게 다르지 않다. 그들이 원하는 것은 자유다. 자유민주주의, 할 때의 바로 그 자유!   나는 환자들에게 천천히 말한다. “너희들이 퇴원시켜 달라고 매일매일 떼를 쓴다 해서 오냐오냐하며 퇴원을 시키는 건 온당치 않다. 너희들을 그냥 길거리에 내던질 수는 없어! ‘community residence, 지역사회 거주지’에서 받아주면 좋겠지만 남들과 사이가 나쁜 사람들은 ‘노생큐’란다.”   ‘improve, (증세가) 호전되거나 나아지다’라는 화제가 나온다. 낫는다는 게 뭐냐? 누군가 대답한다. “Feeling better! 기분이 좋아지는 거요!” “오케이, 그러면 기분이 좋아지는 게 어떤 건지 말해봐라.” 그들과 나는 더는 대화가 진척되지 않는다.   대인관계가 좋지 않은 성격장애 증상은 아무리 약을 먹어도 증세가 호전되지 않기가 일쑤다. 때로는 상황이 악화한다. 하는 일마다 족족 풀리지 않을 때 일을 해결할 방법을 모색하지 않고 애꿎이 항우울제만 자꾸 먹으면 짜증이 활성화되는 수가 허다하다. 일이 풀리게 하는 약은 세상에 없다.   행동과 감정을 분리하는 것은 매우 힘든 일이지만, 사람의 마음 상태를 다음과 같이 구분해서 생각하면 여러모로 도움이 된다.   ①Feeling better, doing better - 기분 좋고, 일 잘하기 ②Feeling worse, doing better - 기분 나쁘고, 일 잘하기 ③Feeling better, doing worse - 기분 좋고, 일 잘못하기 ④Feeling worse, doing worse - 기분 나쁘고, 일 잘못하기.   ①은 환경 좋고 운 좋고 머리 좋은 사람의 경우. 당신과 나 같은 갑남을녀는 꿈도 꿀 수 없지. ②는 중산층 소시민의 척박한 일상. 나는 얼떨결에 여기에 속한다. ③에 해당하는 삶이 사회적인 이슈가 되는 수가 많다. 마약 중독에 쩔어 사는 헬렐레한 삶이 좋은 예. 대부분 일을 잘못하기는커녕 아예 일하지 않는다. ④번 같은 최악의 상황은 당신 상상에 맡긴다.   ‘feeling’은 ‘기분’이라는 쉬운 번역이지만 ‘doing’을 ‘일하기’로 옮기기까지는 좀 애를 먹었다. ‘지내기’라 할까 했는데 ②번이 말이 안 되기 때문이다. ‘기분 나쁘고 잘 지내기’는 말은 죽었다 깨어나도 앞뒤가 맞지 않는다. ‘사회’라는 통념이 그 이유다.       좋은 대학에 입학이라도 시키듯이 환자를 격려하고 고무한다. 증세가 완화되고 ‘improve’됐다는 추천서를 외부 에이전시에게 쓴다. 아무리 환청증상이 번번이 일어난다 하더라도 대인관계가 좋은 환자를 그들은 선호한다. 사람이 다 그렇다.   허두에 언급한 ‘improve’는 13세기 영어와 불어에서 ‘토지를 개발해서 이윤을 얻다.’라는 뜻이었다가 15세기에 ‘수익을 남기다 (쉬운 말로 돈을 벌다!)’, 그리고 17세기에 병이 낫는다는 의미로 변천했다. ‘improve’는 자랑스럽다는 의미의 ‘proud’와 말의 뿌리가 같다. 예나 지금이나 부(富)는 자부심의 원천인 것이다.   환자들에게 ‘improve’의 뜻을 캐지 말 걸 그랬나 싶기도 하다. 그들이 원하는 것은 가장 원시적인 의미의 자유다. 답답한 공간에 억류되어 정해진 스케줄을 어김없이 지켜야 하는 단체행동에서 벗어나는 출감의 기쁨일 것이다. 그러나 그들을 밖에서 기다리고 있는 결속감, 인간사회에 속한다는 강박관념을 그들은 온전히 떨쳐버릴 수 있을까. 서량 / 시인·정신과 의사잠망경 출감 feeling better feeling worse 결속감 인간사회

They go there every year to have their babies.   리너: 응. 해마다 새끼 낳으러 거기 온대.   Tracy: That's what was so amazing?   트레이시: 그게 멋졌다는 거야?   Lena: I should know better than to talk to you about nature.   리너:  너한테 자연 얘기하는 내가 바보지.   Tracy: True but you can tell me about your trip to Las Vegas.   트레이시: 그건 그래. 그래도 라스베거스에 갔던 이야기는 해도 돼.     ━   기억할만한 표현     *to have the feeling (that): ~한 것 같다?   I had the feeling she was not telling the truth.
