 1919 년 3 월 1 일, 10 년 가까이 이어진 일제강점기와 강제합병 이후, 우리 민족은
 
힘과 결속 그리고 용기를 가지고 함께 일어나 자유와 민족 자결권 그리고
 
민족성에 대한 권리를 주장했습니다. 서울에서는 33 명의 문화 및 종교
 
지도자들이 독립선언서를 낭독하여 일제로부터의 독립을 위한 한국인들의 용기
 

있는 투쟁의 시작을 알렸습니다.
 
 
 
3 월 1 일은 대한민국에게 역사적인 날이자 전 세계의 한국인들에게 자부심과
 
모두가 하나가 되는 순간이었습니다. 강제합병과 억압 그리고 폭정에 맞서
 
용감하게 맞섰던 200 만 명 이상의 국민을 목격했던 날이었습니다.
 
 
 
올해는 캐나다 선교사들이 대한민국에 첫 발을 디딘 지 133 주년이 되는
 
해입니다. 3.1 운동을 기록하고 보도하려 했던 노력과 일제의 강점을 주시했던
 
선교사이자 수의사이며 학자였던 프랜시스 윌리엄 스코필드 박사는 34 번째 민족
 
대표이자 진정한 선구자로 기억되고 있습니다. 또한 국립 묘지에 안장된 유일한
 
외국인입니다. 일제의 폭정에 맞선 애국지사들의 희생과 용기가 없었다면 지금의
 
대한민국은 없었을 것입니다. 우리는 자유와 민주주의를 위해 싸웠던 용감한
 
애국자들과 한국전 참전 용사들의 덕분에 이 자리에 있습니다. 우리는 현재와
 
미래에 대한 희망을 가질 수 있도록 해줬던 모든 분들을 기억해야 합니다.

On March 1st 1919, after nearly a decade of Japanese military rule and forced assimilation, the Korean people stood together in strength, solidarity, resilience and courage to demand their inherent right to freedom, self-determination and nationhood. In Seoul, 33 Korean cultural and religious leaders read the Proclamation of Independence, marking the beginning of a courageous struggle by the Korean people for independence from Japanese colonialism.
 
March 1st remains a historic day for Korea and a moment of pride and unity for Koreans around the world. It has become a national day to observe and reflect on the more than two million people who stood bravely together against forced assimilation, oppression and tyrannical rule.
 
This year marks the 133rd anniversary of the 1st Canadian missionaries to set foot in Korea. Dr. Francis William Schofield, a missionary, veterinarian and scholar whose efforts to document and report on the March Independence Movement brought attention to the Japanese occupation of Korea, is remembered as the 34th patriot and a true trailblazer. He is the only foreigner to be buried in Korea’s National Cemetery. Korea would not be where it is today had it not been for the sacrifice, courage and resilience of our patriots who stood against the despotic rule of the Empire of Japan. We stand on the shoulders of these brave patriots and our brave veterans of the Korean War who fought for freedom and democracy above all. We must look back and remember those who came before us to be able to appreciate the present and have hope for the future.
