[오늘의 생활영어] You don't know the half of it; 잘 모르고 하는 말이야

(Two friends are talking while waiting for the bus…)

(친구 둘이 버스를 기다려며 이야기를 하는데…)

Cindy: How are your kids?

신디: 아이들은 어때?

Becky: They're a handful.

베키: 내가 감당하기 벅차.

Cindy: Your kids are always so nice.

신디: 아이들이 너무 착하던데.

Becky: But I have trouble keeping up with them.

베키: 그래도 아이들 맞춰주기가 힘들어.

Cindy: I'm not surprised. Three young boys have a lot of energy.

신디: 놀랄 일도 아니다. 남자 애들 셋이니 얼마나 바스락거리겠어.

Becky: You don't know the half of it.

베키: 그게 다가 아니야.

Cindy: What do you mean?

신디: 무슨 말이야?

Becky: They think they know everything.

베키: 지들이 다 안다고 생각해.

Cindy: They'll grow out of that.

신디: 크면 지들도 그런 생각 안해.

Becky: Well I hope it happens before I go crazy.

베키: 글쎄 내가 제 정신 지키고 있을 때 그랬으면 좋겠다.

기억할만한 표현

*(one) is a handfull: 감당하기 힘들다. 벅차다.

"My boss is a handfull. He gives me so much to do and he wants me to work fast."

(우리 부장은 내가 감당하기 힘들어. 일을 너무 많이 주는 데다 빨리 끝내래.)

*keep up with (someone): 뒤지지 않고 따라가다.

"Terry struggles to keep up with the bigger kids." (테리는 큰 아이들을 겨우 따라가고 있어요.)

*grow out of that (or something): 나이가 들면서 (무엇이) 없어지다..

"Jerry grew out of sucking his thumb."

(나이가 들면서 제리는 손가락 빠는 버릇이 없어졌어요.)
