(코리아타운뉴스) 6-Time Grammy Award-winning Producer Selects Esther Nah as Co-Producer

A son of drummer and songwriter Harvey William Mason, Harvey Mason Jr., 49, is one of the most prominent American pop and R&B producers, having worked with the likes of Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston.

Esther Nah, 34, is a second generation Korean-American producer who has impressed Harvey Mason Jr., so much so that the legendary man has selected her as his co-producer last January.

“I submitted my application immediately after hearing from my friend at Berklee College of Music that Harvey Mason is looking for a keyboardist and a producer,” Nah told the Korea Daily last Friday. “He told me that he likes music and asked me to work with him.”

Nah added: “He is an amazing producer. He has trusted my skills and put me in charge of many projects. We choose the direction together before writing the notes. I’m often in charge of designing the first sound. Then, he would continue the production process. We share our ideas with each other as we enter the mixing and mastering process.”

So far, Nah has taken part is producing music for film Pitch Perfect 3. She was also a part of R&B singer Jennifer Hudson’s album. Nah also co-produced music for film Sing 2.

Nah is now working on finalizing the music for Pitch Perfect 3. She said, “For music in movies, it’s important to make songs that express the emotions and the acting of the scenes.”

Born in Vienna, Austria, Nah learned the piano from age 5 to her days in high school. Since age 8, she has also been playing the cello. Although Nah enrolled in a national music school at age 15, she soon piqued an interest in mainstream music. She then began learning the jazz piano before attending Berklee College of Music in 2012. She has since been putting her name out in the business as a songwriter, pianist, cellist and producer.

After receiving a degree in music production in May last year, Nah began working for L.A.-based music technology firm ROLI (roli.com) since September. ROLI has placed a lot of faith in Nah, who has been taking on both songwriting and production projects for the company.

Once a song is selected, Nah’s job is to turn it into various genres, including pop, R&B and even hip hop. She is also in charge of adding instruments to consolidate the changes. This is also where Harvey Mason recognized Nah’s level of talent that led him to scout her.

Nah’s dream is to work with talented artists in the future to continue to deliver hope and love to the rest of the world. She also aspires to cultivate a generation of talented musicians.

“I would like to co-produce with Korean filmmakers,” Nah said. “I also want to deliver a message to Korean and Asian women that being talented, humble and hardworking can help you to success regardless of your race or gender.”
