[FAFSA 신청 방법] 온라인 접수가 가장 빠르고 편리

FAFSA는 내년 1월1일부터 온라인과 우편으로 접수한다. 온라인으로 작성하려면 공식 웹사이트(www.fafsa.ed.gov)에 들어간다. 온라인 작성이 가장 빠르고 편리하고 정확하다.

100가지 FAFSA 질문 항목 중 반드시 'YES'라고 답해야 학자금 보조를 받는데 유리한 항목이 있다. Are you registered with Selective Service? (징집시 군대 가겠는가?)와 Are you interested in being considered for work-study? (워크 스터디를 하겠는가?)이다.

FAFSA 질문 항목 중 학부모의 질문 중 하나가 학생이 Dependent 인지 아니면 Independent 인지를 표시하는 부분이다. 대부분의 학생은 부모의 Dependent로 접수를 한다. Dependent Student의 경우에는 학생의 소득과 재산 그리고 부모님의 소득과 모든 재산을 보고 학자금 지원내역 및 규모가 교정된다.

반면 Independent로 접수할 경우 학자금 지원에서 혜택을 볼 수도 있다. 그 이유는 학생의 소득 및 재산만 보고 부모의 경제 상황은 전혀 고려하지 않기 때문이다. 대부분 고등학생의 경우 거의 소득이 없고 재산도 없기 때문에 개인 혹은 가정에서 부담할 수 있는 학비규모(Family Contribution)는 한 푼도 없다는 판단하에 많은 학자금 지원이 보장되는 것이다.

내 자녀를 Independent로 신청할 수 있는 가를 궁금해 하지만 답변은 FAFSA 신청서에 명시된 내용을 근거로 스스로 구할 수 있다. 아래 질문 중에 답변 하나라도 'YES' 라면 Independent 가 될 수 있다. 그러나 만일 답변 모두가 'NO' 라면 Independent 가 아닌 Dependent 로만 접수할 수 있다.

- At the beginning of the 2011~2012 school year, will you be working on a master's or doctorate program (such as an MA MBA MD JD PhD EdD or graduate certificate etc.)?

- Are you currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training?
- Are you a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces?
- At any time since you turned age 13 were both your parents deceased were you in foster care or were you a dependent or ward of the court?
- As determined by a court in your state of legal residence are you or were you an emancipated minor?
- As determined by a court in your state of legal residence are you or were you in legal guardianship?
- On or after July 1 2010 were you homeless or were you at risk of being homeless?
